Jackson Park in brief

Jackson Park covers 551.52 acres in Woodlawn1. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed it in 18713. Chicago won the right to host the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1890 and chose Jackson Park as its site1. The fair opened on May 1, 18931. Olmsted and Daniel Burnham laid out the grounds1. After the fair closed, the site went back to parkland1.

The park is named for President Andrew Jackson1. It joined the Chicago Park District in 19341. Its golf course, opened in 1899, was the first public course west of the Alleghenies1.

The ride south

Divvy’s own South Side ride gives the shape of it. It starts at Streeter Dr & Grand Ave near Navy Pier and follows the trail south4. The first three legs are about a mile each4.

Leg What you pass

Second mile Museum Campus: Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium4
Third mile Skyline views behind the planetarium, Soldier Field, McCormick Place4

Bike and Roll lists its Lakefront Trail South ride at 10 miles and four hours, and its Hyde Park and Japanese Garden ride at 8.5 miles and two to four hours2. What to stop for

Museum of Science and Industry. The museum occupies the original Fine Arts Palace, one of two structures that remain from the fair1. It reopened in that building in 19333.

Wooded Island and the Japanese garden. The park’s green features include Wooded Island, with its Japanese garden, and cherry blossom trees around the Columbian Basin1. The garden dates from the 1893 fair, and its pavilion was modeled on the Ho-o-Do of the Byodo-in Temple in Kyoto3. It was renamed Osaka Garden in 20133. Habitat restoration on the island began in 20153.

Promontory Point. An artificial peninsula at 55th Street, with views of the downtown skyline to the north5. It is a common spot for picnics, sunbathing and swimming5.

63rd Street Beach. The Park District’s beach season runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend3. The Chicago Landmark 63rd Street Bathing Pavilion stands here3.

The lagoons. The park offers three harbors1. The lagoons have become a popular fishing spot3.

Hyde Park off the trail

Hyde Park lies seven miles south of the Loop, on the shore of Lake Michigan5. The University of Chicago was founded here in 18915. Robie House and Chicago Pile-1, the first artificial nuclear reactor, are both listed in the original 1966 National Register of Historic Places5. On the first weekend in June, the 57th Street Art Fair takes over 57th Street5. For a guided version, see the Hyde Park and Obama bike tour.

The Obama Presidential Center

The Obama Presidential Center stands in Jackson Park, on the border with Hyde Park5. Barack Obama chose the park on July 27, 2016, and ground was broken on September 28, 20213. The campus is now open, and demand for museum tickets is high7. Availability is updated on the second Wednesday of every month at 10 AM Central7.

The project called for closing South Cornell Drive between 60th and 67th Streets, a six-lane thoroughfare3. The Park District lists a Jackson Park transportation improvements project in support of the center1.

Hours, repairs and trail rules

The park is open from 6 AM to 11 PM every day1. Metered parking is available in nearby lots1. In 2018 the Park District finished separating the Lakefront Trail into an 18-mile bike trail and an 18.5-mile pedestrian trail6. Keep to the bike side.
