The Obama bike tour has changed. It once meant a guided ride past the neighborhood where Barack Obama lived. Now the draw is a destination: a presidential center near the lakefront, reachable from the Lakefront Trail. This page covers the ride, the Center and the history of the guided tours. For other guided rides, see Bike Tours.

The ride south

Hyde Park sits on the shore of Lake Michigan, 7 miles south of the Loop1. The Lakefront Trail carries you there. The Center’s own directions call Jackson Park easily accessible by bike5, and its near-lakeside location makes it fairly easy to reach by bicycle or e-scooter from the trail7. For the trail itself, read the Lakefront Trail guide. It is open 24 hours a day, though the parks beside it close at 11 PM9.

Bike and Roll publishes a Hyde Park and Japanese Garden route: 8.5 miles, 2 to 4 hours, with an electric bike recommended6. Its list of attractions runs from Buckingham Fountain and the Museum Campus to the beaches and the University of Chicago6.

Crossing to Jackson Park

DuSable Lake Shore Drive separates the trail from the park. The Obama Foundation names three crossings: the underpasses at 57th Street and 59th Street, and Hayes Drive just north of the 63rd Street Beachhouse5.

Divvy rideshare stations and bike racks stand on the Center’s campus5. The Center has inverted-U bike racks7. The address is 6001 S. Stony Island Avenue4.

The Obama Presidential Center

The Center opened on June 19, 20262. It stands on a 19.3-acre campus in Jackson Park, beside the University of Chicago2. Four buildings and landscaped parkland make up the site2. Jackson Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, and it already holds the Museum of Science and Industry2.

Most of the campus is free and open to the public4. Only the museum requires a ticket4. Outdoor areas, including the Playground, Women’s Garden and Promenade, are open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.4. The museum, forum and campus shop open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday from 1 to 8 p.m.4. Buildings close on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day4.

Museum tickets

Museum entry requires a timed ticket4. The Foundation updates availability on the second Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m. CT3. Illinois residents receive free admission every Tuesday4. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult on campus4.

What else to ride past

Promontory Point is an artificial peninsula at 55th Street, with views of the downtown skyline1. Jackson Park consists of lagoons around the Wooded Island, which holds a small Japanese garden1. Hyde Park hosted the World’s Columbian Exposition in 18931. Bike and Roll lists the University of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Osaka Japanese Garden and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House as the neighborhood’s anchors6.

Barack Obama lived in Hyde Park for 12 years1. In 2009 his house stood behind steel barricades8.

The 2009 Obama tours

The guided Obama tour has a short history. In the summer of 2009, Bobby’s Bike Hike began leading Obama-themed bike tours of Hyde Park8. One version, the Obama Stimulus Package, ran 22 miles from downtown to Hyde Park and back8. It left Bobby’s at 9 a.m. daily8. Stops included Promontory Point and a basketball court in Jackson Park8. On that tour, a rider who stepped in front of the barricades near the Obama house to take a photo drew a warning from a police officer8.

That tour belongs to 20098. If you want the same ground today, ride it yourself: trail, underpass, park, Center.

Getting back

If 7 miles each way is too much, Metra Electric has three stations in Hyde Park, at 51st/53rd Street, 55th-56th-57th Street and 59th Street/University of Chicago1. CTA Route 10 runs as the Obama Presidential Center/Museum of Science & Industry Express7. See the Metra bike rules before you board with a bike.
