The Lakefront Trail is the reason to rent in Chicago. A bike from the right shop puts the whole shoreline under the wheel with no traffic to read.
The trail you are renting for
The Park District runs the trail from Ardmore Ave. in the north to 71st St. in the south1. Since 2018 it has been two paths: an 18-mile bike trail and an 18.5-mile pedestrian trail1. Rental riders belong on the bike side. Tourists on rental bikes share the trail daily with commuters and marathon trainers1.
On September 14, 2026 the Park District reported a full inspection of the entire 18 miles1. Repairs consist of asphalt patching and seal-coating, starting at 6300 south and moving north one section at a time1. Construction signage goes up ahead of each work zone1. Slow down at the signs and ride around the zone.

Age limits differ by shop. Igor’s requires riders to be 18 or older and to show a valid ID7. Bobby’s rents e-bikes to riders 16 and older and comfort bikes to riders 12 and older3. At Bike and Roll, anyone under 18 must wear a helmet6.
Deposits and cancellations differ too. Bike and Roll takes a credit card and/or valid driver license or passport as the rental deposit6. Igor’s requires a deposit to hold a reservation and refunds it in full when you cancel at least 24 hours ahead7. Bike and Roll sells a damage and theft waiver at $5 per pedal bike per day and $10 per electric bike per day6. 3rd Coast Cycles includes helmets with all rentals and offers locks9. Bike and Roll refunds a cancellation made up to 72 hours before the start time, less a 10% service fee6. Late returns carry overtime charges and late fees there6. Igor’s gives no refunds or credits for early returns, and late returns may cost extra7. Bike and Roll also takes walk-ups, though it recommends reservations6.
Scooters are not an alternative. The city bars scooters from the Lakefront Trail2.
Where the bike takes you
From Bobby’s shop you reach Navy Pier, North Avenue Beach, Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain, the Chicago Riverwalk, Museum Campus and Lincoln Park Zoo on car-free trails3.
