Spring: patient riders win
Spring swings. March, April and May can jump between warm and cool days within a week, with rain or snow possible6. In March, highs average 47.0 F and cross 50 F on 11.5 days1. In April the average high is 59.0 F and 23.4 days reach 50 F or more1.
The last spring freeze normally falls on April 21 at O’Hare3. The earliest on record came March 19, 1925. The latest came May 25, 19923. Do not plan a long trail day in April without layers.
May is the first reliable month. The average high is 70.5 F and 30.3 days reach 50 F or more1. Outdoor vendors and beach services mostly open on Memorial Day weekend at the end of May, and the weekend officially opens the summer season6.
Summer: warm, busy, early starts
June through August is peak season. June averages 80.4 F, July 84.5 F and August 82.5 F1. Highs of 90 F or more occur on 4.1 days in June, 6.5 in July and 3.7 in August1. Midday heat can be intense in July and August, so ride mornings and evenings6.
The beaches run on a fixed calendar. The season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, with lifeguards on duty from 11 am to 7 pm5. The Lakefront Trail is often crowded on summer weekends6. If you want a quieter trail, ride on a weekday or at first light.
September: the best month
September is the month to book. The average high is 75.5 F and the average low is 57.1 F1. The summer crowds disappear after Labor Day while the weather stays comfortable6. Highs reach 90 F on only 1.6 days1.
Bike the Drive 2026 was held Sunday, September 6, starting at 6:30 am7. Helmets were required, with slower riders to the right and faster riders to the left7. Closures began at 10:30 am, when people biking could no longer enter DuSable Lake Shore Drive at Jackson7. Read the Bike the Drive guide for the next edition.
The first weekend of September is also popular for the free Jazz Festival6.
October: short days, last good rides
October is crisp. The average high falls to 62.7 F and the low to 45.4 F1. Fall colors peak in mid-to-late October6. The normal first autumn freeze at O’Hare is October 19. The earliest on record was September 22, 1995, and the latest was November 24, 19312.
By the end of October and the start of November, Buckingham Fountain shuts down, public restrooms close and harbors begin winter preparations6. Plan restroom stops accordingly. The normal first trace of snow arrives October 314.
Winter: possible, not casual
Chicago riders do ride in winter. The question is preparation. January’s average high is 31.6 F and its average low 18.8 F1. Highs stay at or below 32 F on 16.5 days in January and 11.2 in February1. Lows reach 32 F or lower on 28.1 days in January1.
Snow arrives on a pattern. The normal first measurable snow is November 18 and the last is April 24. The normal first snowfall of one inch or more is December 7 and the last is March 204. The wind off Lake Michigan in January and February can be brutal6. Ride neighborhood streets instead of the lakefront in those months.
Dress in three layers, because cold-weather riding is all about layering8. Regular tires work in winter except in heavy snow of more than 3 inches8. Fit fenders to deter road gunk8. Main streets are cleared first but carry more traffic8. The City’s Department of Transportation plows about 70 miles of protected bike lanes. The Department of Streets and Sanitation clears paint-only lanes9. For the full kit list, see winter cycling in Chicago.
