Chicago after dark is a different city on a bike: the lakefront is quiet, the skyline is lit and the fountain performs. Bike and Roll runs a dedicated night ride, and the rest of this page covers what it includes and what the law asks of a rider after sundown. For every other format, see Bike Tours.

The tour: Bikes at Night

Bike and Roll runs the Bikes at Night Illuminated Tour. It lasts two hours and departs at 7:30 PM1. Adults pay $45; riders aged 12 to 18 pay $351. The price includes the bike and a helmet1.

The route runs through Museum Campus, with skyline views, and past Buckingham Fountain1. The tour page lists the finish as the fireworks at Navy Pier1. The tour departs from and returns to Bike and Roll at 600 E. Grand Avenue, at the main walkway entrance to Navy Pier by the Welcome Pavilion1.

Arrive 15 minutes before departure1. Late arrivals risk forfeiting their seats7. Reservations are recommended for all tours7. If you want a bike for your own ride instead, see bike rental at Navy Pier.

The fireworks

Navy Pier’s summer fireworks are free2. In 2026 they ran every Wednesday at 9 PM and every Saturday at 10 PM, from May 23 to September 52. Viewers watch from the Pier or from the nearby lakefront4.

The 2026 series ended on September 52. The show belongs to summer.

Buckingham Fountain

The fountain is the centerpiece of the route. Dedicated on August 26, 1927, it operates from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily, typically from early May through mid-October, weather permitting5. Water shows begin every hour on the hour and last 20 minutes5. After dusk the shows are choreographed with lights and music, and the last show begins at 10:00 p.m.5

During a show the center jet climbs to 150 feet5. The fountain pushes more than 14,000 gallons a minute through 193 jets5.

Cancellations and weather

The operator cancels the tour if conditions make riding dangerous. If it cannot reschedule, it issues a full credit or refund1. If the weather is doubtful, call one to two hours before the start time to confirm7.

Cancel by choice at least 72 hours ahead and the refund comes less a 10% service fee7. Every rider signs a release of liability before riding7. Riders under 18 must wear a helmet7.

What Illinois requires after dark

A bike ridden at night must carry lights. Illinois law is exact:

Every bicycle when in use at nighttime shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front3

The rear needs a red reflector, or a steady or flashing red light visible from 500 feet3. Sirens are not allowed on bicycles3. Ride the lakefront with both lights on. The Lakefront Trail is open 24 hours, though the parks and beaches beside it close at 11 PM6.

An evening food ride

Bobby’s Bike Hike runs an evening version of its food tour. Bikes, Bites & Views departs at 5:30pm9. The night route is downtown: the Gold Coast, River North, the Riverwalk, Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain and the lakefront9. It covers the same foods as the day tour9. Riders must be 16 or older, and the ride runs about four and a half hours and 13 miles9. It is a dinner on wheels more than a fireworks ride. Details are in the food bike tour guide.

The other after-dark ride

One Chicago night ride is not a tour for sale. Since 1989, Loyola University history professor Timothy Gilfoyle has led a midnight bike ride for students and friends8. It starts at 9 PM, and riders normally return to campus between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. the next day8. The pace is leisurely, with frequent stops at historic and architectural sites8. Riders sign a waiver and are urged to dress in layers8. The 2026 ride, on September 10, has passed; the listed dates ahead are April 22, 2027 and September 16, 20278. Loyola students, faculty and alumni are invited, and they are encouraged to bring family and friends8.

How to pick your night

For the fireworks finish, wait for the summer series, Wednesdays and Saturdays2. For the lit skyline and the fountain, ride any evening while the fountain runs, typically early May through mid-October5. For a daytime alternative, read the lakefront bike tour guide, or compare every tour on the Chicago bike tours page.
