An ebike trades money for minutes. The price is set by the minute, and the minutes add up fast.

What the ebike is

A Divvy ebike gives electric motor assist while you pedal and tops out at 20 mph2. Divvy’s pitch is plain: start pedaling and the power kicks in4. The newer generation doubles the battery life, adds a stronger motor and more seat-height options, and carries a bright LED front light and reflective paint for riding after sunset3.

Unlike a classic Divvy bike, an ebike can start and end a trip at any Divvy station, or at legal bike parking for an extra fee2. The city’s April 2023 announcement said ebikes can begin and end rides across the entire city, and that Lyft had installed 100 new bike racks and marked 233 existing city racks as free ebike parking7.

What it costs

Plan Unlock Per minute
Single ride $11 $0.441
Day pass Free1 $0.441
Annual member Free1 $0.201
Divvy for Everyone Free5 $0.055

Members get a second break on long rides. Trips of 30 to 45 minutes are capped at the cost of a 30-minute ride6. Divvy’s pricing page shows the same cap as $6.00 for minutes 31 to 451.

Here is what a 15-minute ride costs, from the rates above1:

  • Single ride: $1 + 15 × $0.44 = $7.601.
  • Day pass: 15 × $0.44 = $6.601.
  • Annual member: 15 × $0.20 = $3.001.

A 30-minute ride costs $1 + 30 × $0.44 = $14.20 on a single ride, 30 × $0.44 = $13.20 on a day pass and 30 × $0.20 = $6.00 for a member1. For a long ride, a membership or a shop rental changes the math. See Divvy pricing and ebike rental in Chicago.

Parking and locking

Dock or lock, never both. Dock the ebike at any Divvy station, or lock it with its cable4. Lock it with the cable at an e-station, where only ebikes belong, or park it free at over 600 public racks or posts4,3. Use the cable on the bike at an e-station and keep classic and personal bikes off those racks4.

Leaving an ebike at any other legal public location adds $3.00 for non-members and $2.00 for Divvy members3. Never lock the bike to itself, to private property or to trees4.

Member perks on ebikes

Members riding ebikes can pause a trip for up to 15 minutes6. A “classic mode” lets a member pick full assistance or reduced assistance with classic bike pricing when no classic bike is nearby6. Both were part of the July 2025 announcement6. In the same announcement the city said unlock fees would be removed for non-members on trips that start in designated equity priority areas6.

Riding one

Divvy recommends a helmet, gradual braking with both hands and caution in traffic4. Illinois sets its own rules for ebikes, covered in ebike laws in Illinois.
