A community bike shop is built around a simple idea: you learn to fix the bike yourself, and the shop sells or gives away bikes that others have donated. Chicago has four to know. The Recyclery, Rogers Park

The Recyclery is a nonprofit educational bike shop in Rogers Park, established in 200611. It is a 501(c)3 nonprofit11.

Open Shop. Use the shop’s tools to fix your own bike with guidance from volunteer mechanics. No experience is necessary1. Open Shop runs Monday 5pm to 7pm, Thursday 7pm to 9pm and Saturday 11am to 2pm1. Repair projects often snowball and run longer than you expect1. The shop aims for an atmosphere free of mechanical elitism1.

Bike sales. The Recyclery sells refurbished bikes in Rogers Park9. In-person sales run Wednesdays 6pm to 8pm and Saturdays 11am to 2pm at 7628 N. Paulina St., next to the Howard station9.

Freecyclery. Each year the program donates more than 250 refurbished bicycles to people who need a bike for transportation2. There are two ways in: a referral from a partner organization, or an Earn-a-Bike fellowship2. Recipients must have a secure lock. Helmets are strongly encouraged but not required2. A $25 donation provides one lock and helmet set2.

Earn-A-Bike. The fellowship lets locals build and refurbish a bike of their own5. A non-refundable tuition of $50 covers a lock and helmet5. Apply through the volunteer application and ask to join the wait list5.

Working Bikes

Working Bikes has run since 1999 and has sent new life to 150,000 bicycles across the globe and tens of thousands in Chicago12. Donated bikes are shipped to international projects, repaired and donated locally, or fixed up and sold in the storefront12. Shop sales directly benefit the bike donation programs12.

The Service Department is at 2434 S. Western Ave.6. Its hours are Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 6pm6.

Buying. Refurbished bikes carry a limited 30-day warranty. The average price for an adult bike runs $200 to $3003. The storefront also stocks a large selection of used, vintage and hard-to-find parts3.

Repairs. The Service Department does not check in bikes or provide full tune-ups. It focuses on small repairs and quick adjustments6. A flat fix costs $11 and includes a new tube6. Wheel truing is $15 for one wheel and $25 for both6. A brake adjustment is $8 each and a hub adjustment $5 each6. New fenders are $20, before tax6.

Free bikes. Working Bikes runs Cycle of Power for adults and Cycle of Peace for kids and youth7. Its partner organizations include veteran hospitals, youth organizations and schools7. In a typical year it donates between 800 and 1,000 bicycles to individuals through the program7. Adult recipients also receive a helmet, a u-lock and a set of lights7.

West Town Bikes and Ciclo Urbano

West Town Bikes empowers youth through hands-on education and business development13. Its full-service shop, Ciclo Urbano, is at 2459 W Division St. It is open Tuesday to Thursday 11am to 7pm, Friday and Saturday 11am to 6pm, Sunday 11am to 5pm, and closed Mondays13.

Blackstone Bicycle Works, Woodlawn

Blackstone Bicycle Works sits at 6100 S. Blackstone Ave.14. It is part of Experimental Station, a nonprofit serving the South Side15. In 2024 its Earn-A-Bike summer camp ran three sessions over six weeks, and 39 youths aged 9 to 17 earned bikes10. At the end of camp, each youth received a donated bike with a pump, toolkit, bike lock and the helmet they had decorated10.
